Walter J. Phillips (1884-1963)
Mountain Schaeffer , 1927
colour woodcut on paper (edition: 100)
22.1 x 25.5 cm

In Wet Paint, Phillips' unpublished manuscript on watercolour technique, this print was used to illustrate a type of composition:

An example of the pyramidal type of composition. The theme is stated in the blue mountain, and repreated throughout in simple or elaborate form — in the general contour of the group of trees, in the patch of blue sky below the clouds, and in the tumbled rocks in the foreground.
