Walter J. Phillips (1884-1963)
Summer Idyll, 1926
woodcut on paper (edition: 100)
55.4 x 30.8 cm

This print was completed in July of 1926. It required the cutting of more than twelve different blocks, and bears witness to Phillips' confidence and mastery of the colour woodcut medium. But Phillips admitted to having made two attempts at it. The first attempt was scrapped in total since he was not completely satisfied with the registration. The second attempt is one of his greatest technical achievements in the medium.
