In Wet Paint, Phillips' unpublished manuscript on watercolour painting, this print was used as an illustration of a lineal composition. To the two miniature wharves and the row-boat, in themselves an unsatisfactory pictorial arrangement, Phillips added the tree and the figure of the boy at its base to provide a point of interest. "A dominant line movement radiates from the figure and a degree of balance is established by the verticality of the planks on the left."
