Walter J. Phillips (1884-1963)
Winter Sunshine, 1919
colour woodcut on paper (first state; edition unknown)
10.7 x 10 cm

There are two states for this print, which was first used by Phillips as his 1919 Christmas greeting to his friends. The first state has the word "Xmas" and the date "1919," the second omits both and was probably first printed in 1920. The print was published again as the seventh print in the 1936 portfolio Winter Woodcuts, produced in an edition of 100. The colour variations in this print can be considerable. Phillips noted that only two blocks were cut to produce this little print.
