Walter J. Phillips (1884-1963)
Cineraria, 1928
colour woodcut on paper (edition: 300)
17 x 21 cm

Printed on Goyu paper from three cherry-wood blocks, this is the fifth print in the 1928 portfolio of seven colour prints entitled The Canadian Scene. Phillips provided the following commentary:

Here, I said to myself, is where I put one over on this darned monotonous printing business—three blocks and four printings only. Sad to relate, they took longer to print than any of the others and it was hard work all the time. This is a print that is tame enough to frame.

The flower-centres are printed in bronze powder mixed with a little starch paste and overprinted in part with the blue of the petals. Both the blue and the green are gradated colours.
