NOLAND : S T R I P E S

SHADE, 1967. 22 x 96 in.

One of the early "Stripe" painting, four equal bars, like some of the "Needle Diamonds" it steps down through colour from light to dark, but the tension of the diamond has been replaced by elongation. The picture gains a kind of ease and naturalness as a result of an extended format. SHADE also demonstrates Noland's soft and easy paint application. He has always been a painter, first and foremost.
